Rural diners are a crapshoot. Many don't have any reviews online, so you're really rolling the dice when you sit down to eat.

Are there any tell-tale ways to distinguish diners with home-made grub from ones that serve frozen grossness? Is it impolite to just ask before you order?

ALWAYS ASK WHAT IS HOMEMADE, MADE IN HOUSE OR A SPECIALTY. NO, I DO NOT THINK IT IS IMPOLITE TO ASK IN THE LEAST. REMEMBER YOU CAN ALWAYS GO FOR THE BLT!!
